Women and Elderly Depression
Older women are at higher risk of suffering from elderly depression. Studies show that they are more likely to suffer from this condition primarily because of the hormonal changes that happen in their body after they reach the menopausal stage. Nevertheless, there are other factors which trigger the onset of higher risk of elderly depression in women.
Natural Circadian Rhythms
Circadian Rhythms are regular cycles experienced on a daily basis which are influenced by regular changes in the environment. It is responsible for the regular function of the body including the appetite, sleep, mood and energy level of an individual. When the body suddenly runs out of sync of this natural rhythm, it results to inappropriate productions of hormones which influence the onset of elderly depression.
Social Conditioning
Another important factor to consider in understanding elderly depression in women is their form of expression. While men are characterized as reserved, women have a higher tendency to keep their feelings to themselves especially if they have reached old age. Men can easily make their feelings known to others but women will suppress these emotions and keep it to themselves just to make sure no other family members will be affected.
Personal Circumstances
The fact that you have reached the final season of your life is enough to trigger elderly depression but experiencing the loss of a loved one, financial stressors, family issues and rejection are additional factors which hasten the development of this disorder. Studies reveal that women who are divorced, single or widowed are most likely to become victims of elderly depression. The best remedy for them would be the warm embrace and caring hands of their children, if not their friends or immediate family members.
Physical Condition
The bodily structure of women is frailer in comparison to men and the difficulty of pregnancy, giving birth and menstrual cycles add to the weak nature of their body which also causes a great impact in elderly depression. A weaker body is more prone to illnesses which restrict movement and productivity in the household.
Women have always played a vital role in society. It is a sad fact that after they have done their task of responsibly taking good care of their family; they will end up in just one corner of the house with no one to talk to. Some family members unintentionally treat them like strangers in the house just to avoid unwanted quarrels and misunderstandings.
Unfortunately, this is not the solution to the problem of elderly depression. The more you isolate them, the more they will feel alienated. Get them involve with household duties. Give them simple responsibilities. Take them to the park. Love them in as much as they have loved you when you were still young. Get rid of elderly depression by showing acts of love and kindness to your elderly mother.
